The core of cleaning validation TOC swabs lies in the detection of total organic carbon (TOC). When we use it to wipe the target surface, it’s like a “treasure hunt” in the microscopic world. The material of the swab is carefully selected with excellent adsorption capacity, capable of precisely capturing various organic substances remaining on the surface. Whether it’s the invisible proteins, oils, or the hidden trace amounts of cleaning agent residues, nothing can escape.
After sample collection, these swabs are sent to the professional detection process. One commonly used detection method is the high – temperature catalytic oxidation method. In a special testing instrument, the sample is placed in a high – temperature environment, usually reaching 680 – 950 °C, with the assistance of a catalyst. It’s like a fierce “chemical reaction storm”. Under the dual action of high temperature and the catalyst, organic substances react fully with oxygen and are ultimately oxidized into carbon dioxide. Take simple carbohydrates as an example. Their molecular structures are completely disassembled in this reaction. The carbon element is converted into carbon dioxide, and the hydrogen element combines with oxygen to form water. In this way, complex organic substances are transformed into carbon dioxide, which is easy to detect.
Another detection method, the UV – persulfate oxidation method, also has its unique “working mode”. In this method, the sample is mixed with persulfate, and then under the irradiation of ultraviolet light, the persulfate instantly “transforms” into highly oxidizing free radicals. These free radicals, like “little guards” in the microscopic world, quickly attack the carbon – carbon and carbon – hydrogen bonds in organic substances, gradually oxidizing the organic carbon into carbon dioxide.
The process of detecting carbon dioxide is equally crucial. The non – dispersive infrared detection (NDIR) technology is one of the commonly used means. As we know, carbon dioxide has a unique absorption characteristic for infrared light of a specific wavelength. When the gas containing carbon dioxide passes through the detection device, the infrared light is “trapped” to some extent by the carbon dioxide. The detection device can accurately calculate the concentration of carbon dioxide by precisely measuring the degree of infrared light absorption. Then, based on the pre – established standard curve, the carbon dioxide concentration data is skillfully converted into the content of organic carbon.
Finally, the detected organic carbon content data is compared with the pre – set cleaning limit standards. These standards are not set arbitrarily. They comprehensively consider the usage scenarios of the target items, safety requirements, and relevant industry specifications. Only when the test result is lower than the standard value can the cleanliness of the surface be judged as qualified.
The detection principle of cleaning validation TOC swabs, from sample collection to the final result determination, is closely linked at every step, accurately revealing the true situation of surface cleanliness. It is a key link in ensuring product quality and production environment safety.
