CHG disinfection swabs (Chlorhexidine Gluconate Swab), namely glucose – acid – chlorhexidine disinfection swabs, also known as skin disinfection sticks, are medical supplies used for skin disinfection. They combine the glucose – acid – chlorhexidine solution with disinfection and sterilization functions with the convenient form of swabs.
Ⅱ. Components
Main active ingredient
The main active ingredient is chlorhexidine gluconate. It is a broad – spectrum antibacterial agent and has certain inhibitory and killing effects on Gram – positive bacteria, Gram – negative bacteria, and fungi. For example, it can effectively inhibit the growth of common pathogenic bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli.
Auxiliary ingredients
In addition to chlorhexidine gluconate, there may be some auxiliary ingredients, such as moisturizers used to maintain the moisture of the swabs. These auxiliary ingredients help to ensure that chlorhexidine gluconate can better play its disinfection role and enable the swabs to be smoothly applied to the skin during use.
Ⅲ. Working principle
Destroying the bacterial structure
Chlorhexidine gluconate can adsorb on the surface of bacteria and change the permeability of the bacterial cell membrane. It will destroy the structure of the bacterial cell membrane, causing substances inside the cells, such as potassium ions and phosphoric acid, to leak out, thereby affecting the normal metabolic process of bacteria and leading to bacterial death.
Inhibiting the growth and reproduction of bacteria
It can also combine with certain components in the cytoplasm of bacteria, interfere with the bacterial enzyme system, and inhibit the growth and reproduction of bacteria. For example, it can prevent bacteria from synthesizing certain substances needed for cell wall formation, so that bacteria cannot divide and proliferate normally.
Ⅳ. Characteristics
High – efficiency disinfection
CHG disinfection swabs have relatively strong disinfection ability. In terms of skin disinfection, good disinfection results can be achieved in a relatively short time, reducing the number of microorganisms on the skin surface and lowering the risk of infection. For example, when preparing the skin before minor surgery, using CHG disinfection swabs can effectively remove potential pathogenic bacteria on the skin surface.
Low irritation
Compared with some other disinfectants, chlorhexidine gluconate has less irritation to the skin. This makes it suitable for more sensitive skin areas, such as the face and perineum. When using CHG disinfection swabs for disinfection in these areas, usually no serious skin allergic reactions or irritation symptoms will be caused.
Convenient to use
Existing in the form of swabs, they are easy to operate and carry. Whether in clinical operations in hospitals or in the treatment of small wounds in daily life, they can be used very conveniently. For example, when people accidentally abrade their skin outdoors, CHG disinfection swabs can be easily taken out of the package and used to disinfect the skin around the wound.
Relatively long shelf life
Due to their packaging design and component stability, CHG disinfection swabs can usually be stored for a long time when unopened. This ensures that their disinfection performance will not be easily lost during storage and can play a normal disinfection role when needed.
