I. Product Overview

The CHG (Chlorhexidine Gluconate) skin preparation swab applicator is a medical device used for preoperative skin disinfection. It mainly consists of a swab and a disinfectant solution containing CHG. This applicator is designed to facilitate medical staff to clean and disinfect patients’ skin before surgery, so as to reduce the risk of surgical site infections (SSI).

II. Components and Working Principle

1. Main Component – Chlorhexidine Gluconate (CHG)

• CHG is a biguanide disinfectant with broad-spectrum antibacterial activity. It can effectively combat Gram-positive bacteria (such as Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis), Gram-negative bacteria (such as Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa), and some fungi (such as Candida albicans). Its antibacterial mechanism mainly involves destroying the cell membrane structures of bacteria and fungi, leading to the leakage of intracellular contents, thereby inhibiting or killing microorganisms.
• When CHG comes into contact with the cell membranes of microorganisms, it will adsorb on the membrane surface and change the membrane permeability. This change causes the loss of important substances such as potassium ions inside the cells and simultaneously interferes with the normal metabolic processes of the cells, eventually rendering the microorganisms inactive.

2. Function of the Swab

• The swab, as a carrier, can evenly apply the CHG disinfectant solution on the skin surface. Its material usually selects medical absorbent cotton, which has good water absorption and can fully absorb the disinfectant solution. Moreover, it is soft in texture and will not cause damage to the skin. The stick of the swab is generally made of wood or plastic, with an appropriate length, which is convenient for medical staff to hold and operate, ensuring that it can reach the skin areas around the surgical site for application.

Before surgery, medical staff only need to open the package, take out the applicator, and then directly apply it on the patient’s skin surface.
