What is a flocked swab?

Flocked swab is a sampling tool. It is made of a plastic rod and a soft flocked tip. The flocked tip is usually made of nylon fibers, which are very fine and soft. Flocked swabs are designed to collect samples more effectively and gently than traditional cotton swabs. They are widely used in medical and laboratory settings for collecting samples such as nasal, throat, and vaginal swabs.

The usage method of flocked sampling swab is as follows:

I. Preparation before sampling

1. Clean your hands and wear gloves or disinfect your hands.
2. Confirm that the packaging is intact and within the validity period.

II. Specific methods for sampling different parts

Nasal sampling:

• Tilt your head slightly backward.
• Insert the flocked sampling swab slowly along the nasal wall. The insertion depth is generally the distance from the tip of the nose to the earlobe.
• Gently rotate the swab and stay in the nasal cavity for a few seconds to fully collect the sample.
• Slowly take out the swab and put it into the sampling tube. Break the swab stick so that the sampling head remains in the tube.

Throat sampling:

• Open your mouth and say “ah”.
• Quickly and gently wipe the bilateral tonsils and posterior pharyngeal wall with the flocked sampling swab, avoiding touching the tongue.
• Take out the swab and put it into the sampling tube. Also break the swab stick so that the sampling head remains in the tube.

III. Post-sampling treatment

1. Seal the sampling tube and mark it properly.
2. Dispose of the used sampling swab and gloves and other wastes properly according to regulations.
